Vinoba Bhave Daily used to read every letter in his ashram himself. Not only would he read, but also gave answers to those letters. One day Vinoba was reading letters like everyday. Other colleagues were also sitting with him.
Vinoba was reading every letter carefully. This one particular letter, after reading it, he tore it and put it in the dustbin. Seeing this, a colleague asked- till date you have never done this before. Who wrote this letter and why did you tear it?
Initially Vinoba tried to avoid the question and gave some excuses. When the colleague didn’t feel satisfied, he took out the letter from the dustbin and started to read it. It was a letter from Mahatma Gandhi, where he had praised Vinoba. Surprised, the colleague asked him “This is such a precious letter, something to be preserved. why did you tear it?”
Vinoba simply said – “Praise brings ego in mind. Mind wanders due to ego and it becomes difficult to achieve the goal. I took the love of Bapu in my heart and discarded the attachment.”
गांधीजी की चिट्ठी

विनोबा भावे रोज अपने आश्रम में आई हर चिट्ठी स्वयं पढ़ते थे। न सिर्फ पढ़ते थे बल्कि उन चिट्ठियों का जवाब भी देते थे। एक दिन विनोबा भावे रोज की तरह चिट्ठियां पढ़ रहे थे। उनके साथ अन्य सहयोगी भी बैठे थे।
विनोबाजी हर चिट्ठी बड़े ध्यान से पढ़ रहे थे। तभी उन्होंने एक चिट्ठी फाड़कर कूड़ेदान में डाल दी। ये देखकर विनोबाजी के सहयोगी ने पूछा- आज तक आपने पहले कभी ऐसा नहीं किया। ये पत्र किसने लिखा है और आपने इसे क्यों फाड़ा?
सहयोगी का प्रश्न सुनकर विनोबाजी ने उन्हें गोल-मोल जवाब देकर संतुष्ट करने का प्रयास किया, लेकिन उनके सहयोगी समझ गए कि बात कुछ और है। बहुत पूछने पर विनोबाजी ने उन्हें बताया कि वो पत्र महात्मा गांधी का था।
ये सुनकर विनोबाजी के सहयोगी को आश्चर्य हुआ और उन्होंने कूडेदान से उस पत्र के टुकड़े निकाले और पढ़ने लगे। उस पत्र में महात्मा गांधी ने विनोबाजी की प्रशंसा की थी।
यह देख विनोबाजी के सहयोगी ने उनसे कहा कि- ये पत्र तो संभाल कर रखने योग्य है, आपने इसे क्यों फाड़ा।
विनोबाजी ने सीधे शब्दों में कहा- प्रशंसा से मन में अहंकार उत्पन्न होता है। मन में अहंकार आने से ध्यान भटकता है और लक्ष्य पाना मुश्किल हो जाता है। इसलिए मैंने इस पत्र को फाड़कर कूड़ेदान में डाल दिया।
